Can Everything be Quantified?
I don’t like math, or numbers really. I balance my check book diligently. But numbers fail to capture the ever present grace that unfolds daily before me. Still, we live in a culture obsessed with numbers. Everything is quantified: children’s reading progress, protein portions, water intake, job performance. Even the Christian church is not immune to numbers. The most common question I am asked about Grace, “How many people coming on Sunday?” Rarely do people ask, “How many people have been transformed?” The only number included in this report is FIVE. Advent 2015 marked Grace's 5th year gathering as a Christian community in the ever-changing 21st century. Some things—like transformation, grace, and forgiveness—cannot be quantified and never should be. At Grace Community Boston there has been an abundance of blessings beyond the reach of mathematics. |
